![]() Silent Pictures Custom Framing will present a showing of "photopaintings" by Spencer Sky entitled "Human/Nature." The show will be scheduled from October 22nd through November 27th, 2010, at Silent Pictures Custom Framing's 3001 State Street Gallery. You are invited to meet the artist at a wine and cheese reception held from 5-7 pm on Friday, October 22nd. Spencer Sky, a Clinical Psychologist and City College professor (known to his clients and students as Dr. Spencer Sherman), has lived in Santa Barbara for over thirty years. In this show, we view an intriguing cross section of his work, captured by a simple point-and-shoot camera and seen through his gifted eye and creative digital artistry.
Artist's Statement - Spencer Sky Four years ago, Spencer Sky (Dr. Spencer Sherman, a Clinical Psychologist and teacher at Santa Barbara City College and Adult Ed), was given a point-and-shoot camera as a birthday gift. It was love at first click. After a lifetime of writing and a fling at acting, he finally found his artistic identity. Since that time, every spare moment has been spent either taking pictures or sitting at the computer turning them into what he calls photopaintings. What are photopaintings? They are photographs that look like paintings. That is, they highlight the ordinary, reveal the luminosity that resides within the commonplace. Photopaintings are intended to call forth a fresh appreciation for what's all around us and so often taken for granted. This show at Silent Pictures Gallery is Spencer's third. His first was at the Faulkner Gallery East in the Santa Barbara Public Library in February of 2009, and his second was as part of a three-photographer exhibition at Gallery Ten-Twenty-Nine (located at 1029 State Street) last October and November. He states, "My work is a direct outgrowth of my practice of mindfulness. When I'm busy rushing about, or when I go out shooting with a preconceived idea of what I want, I often don't register what's right in front of me. I'm so in my head that I miss the actuality of things. But when I remember to be present, and to simply attend to whatever emerges, wonderful visions appear one after another. My job is just to recognize them, and then try to do them justice artistically. "What I strive to realize and seek to illustrate is this: when we are open to life, it opens to us." Silent Pictures Custom Framing presents a selection of photographers and artists changing displays every 4 to 8 weeks. For additional info contact Glenn Avolio, glenn@silentpicturessb.com
